Read about how to use Twitter the right way to promote your business. (here)
There is a rush to judgment when a business first sticks a toe into the social media pond. The compulsion is to promote the heck out of the business from the first timeline on Twitter or the first status update on Facebook or the first posting on a blog. This is an enormous mistake.
Do you turn on the TV to watch commercials? Maybe during SuperBowl, but most of the time, you find them a necessary nuisance. There is little benefit in making your Twitter, Facebook or blog visitors site through commercial after commercial until they realize that your social media message has NO value.
The best websites bring real value to their readers and social media is no different. Bringing your brand to your readers while providing them with something they can take away from your social media is not impossible. A link to your business website with a brief bio is possible with Twitter. There is more information that can be placed on Facebook without getting in the way of the most interesting stuff. Most blogs have a sidebar or the ability to add pages, so your interesting information can remain front and center.
Read the article linked above for more information. Don’t make the mistake approaching social media the wrong way. Impulsiveness just doesn’t work.
In some cases, a business might use social media as in informal method of communicating with customers. It may be a customer service channel. In these cases, keep the heavy-handed promotion at bay also. Social media is about establishing a dialogue with clients, customers or prospects. Keep it that way.
